ABSTRACT

Introduction. Currently, the conception of old age and aging has been considered an obstacle for the elderly, where diverse perceptions arise affecting several areas of their lives, not only in the biological but also in the psychological and social aspects. The objective of this essay is to analyze the challenge that demographic aging represents for geriatric nursing, and at the same time, to describe the positive approaches to old age, which intervene in the social construct of aging. Development. Healthy and active aging is achieved when elderly people become the main caregiver of themselves since they are of great contribution in many ways within their family and community in general; taking into account that in the future we will become older and we will be the new adult population. Furthermore, geriatric nursing provides a different approach to the sense of usefulness that older people have in society and identifies interventions that contribute to the promotion of healthy and active aging. Conclusion. The social construction faced by the older adult population demonstrates the need to implement a new model of care that ensures a dignified aging and adapts to the needs of this age group, where geriatrics intervenes by providing the possibility of adjusting the changes of old age, allowing them to develop the ability to make decisions and collaborate in the integration of the older adult in society.
