ABSTRACT

Introduction: in December 2019, an outbreak of pneumonia due to the SARS-CoV2 virus emerged in China. The World Health Organization named this new viral disease COVID-19.
Objective: to epidemiologically characterize confirmed COVID-19 patients from the Ciego de Ávila municipality.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive investigation was carried out that included all confirmed COVID-19 patients in the Ciego de Ávila municipality, in the period between March 19 and July 29, 2020. The information was obtained from the epidemiological surveys, reports and records of the Municipal Hygiene and Epidemiology Unit. The data obtained were summarized in tables and graphs. The ethical principles of the research were complied with.
Results: 19 patients were confirmed. The cumulative incidence rate in the municipality was 12.21 / 100,000 inhabitants. The North area was the most affected (17,69/100 000 inhabitants); 63,16 % were asymptomatic and 47,37 % were health workers. Weeks 12 and 13 were the ones with the highest reports. Patients aged between 50 and 59 years (31,58 %), male (63,16 %), and contact with confirmed cases as a source of infection (63,16 %) predominated.
Conclusions: the confirmed patients with COVID-19 were few, almost half were health workers and the majority was reported in weeks 12 and 13, especially from the North health area. Asymptomatic men aged between 50 and 59 years predominated. Most were contacts of confirmed cases.
