ABSTRACT
Introduction: Over time, few retrospective studies have been carried out at the hospital level to analyze the histopathological results seen in the Maxillofacial Surgery services around the world. Histopathological analysis, as well as the clinical data of the specimens from which biopsies are taken, are important to determine a final diagnosis and thus giving the appropriate approach for the surgical treatment on each case. Annually the maxillofacial surgery service of the Hospital Juárez de México receives patients from all over the Mexican Republic with oral pathologies.
Objective: To evaluate the frequency of histopathological studies of HJM samples from January to December 2019, as well as the distribution of sex, age, and histopathological diagnosis.
Material and methods: A retrospective study of 152 histopathological samples was carried out and analizyng a number of variables: sex, age and histopathological diagnosis, in addition, the lesions were classified into five groups depending on their origin: inflammatory/reactive, infectious, cystic and benign odontogenic neoplasms and malignant and benign and malignant non-odontogenic neoplasms.
Results: The female sex is the most affected (62.5%), the lesions of inflammatory/reactive origin represented the highest number of cases; however, the most common histopathological diagnosis was keratocyst.
Conclusions: Our results coincide with data reported in previous studies carried out at the hospital level.
