ABSTRACT

Older adults represent a growing percentage of the world's population, and the use of antimicrobials in this age group is quite frequent. For this reason, understanding the changes involved with aging and the impact they have on these drugs allows them to be used appropriately, leading to the lowest possible rate of complications and avoiding the development of multi-resistant germs. As age advances, important changes occur in the gastrointestinal tract and the renal system, which have a major influence on the way a drug is absorbed, metabolized and excreted, as well as the desired effect it will have on the body. Increasing disease prevalence, as well as age-independent factors such as lifestyle, may further influence pharmacological effects. In addition, given the frequent polypharmacy in the elderly, the risk of drug interactions is another important factor to take into account prior to prescribing any medication.
