ABSTRACT

Background: intertrigo is an inflammatory condition that can affect large folds, and can be later infected by Candida spp. if risk factors are present.
Objective: to determine the epidemiological and mycological aspects of intertrigo colonized by Candida spp. in the Mycology Section at Dr. Manuel Gea González General Hospital.
Methods: retrospective, observational, descriptive and crosssectional study. We analyzed 45 cases of intertrigo from January 2015 to August 2020, they underwent direct examination with koh/chlorazol black, and were subsequently cultivated in a Sabouraud agar.
Results: Candida albicans was the most isolated agent in 70% of the cases. We observed slight predominance in housewives (57%) affecting mainly the inguinal fold. Diabetes mellitius, and hypertension were found in 40%.
Conclusions: the importance of this condition lies in its high prevalence in patients with comorbidities, so identifying them properly at a first-level healthcare would reduce morbidity risks.
