Survey on the implementation of clinical simulation in kinesiology: current situation in Chile

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The training of competencies in kinesiology has evolved thanks to the incorporation of new teaching-learning strategies, where the clinical simulation (CS) has been positioning itself exponentially in Chile. Nevertheless, there is an information gap related to the execution of this strategy. Objective: To determine the current state of clinical simulation in the Kinesiology career in Chile, in aspects of design, application, curricular insertion, teaching training and impact. Material and methods: Descriptive, quantitative and longitudinal study in Chilean higher education institutions with Kinesiology. The type of sample was non-probabilistic for convenience. A survey designed and validated by experts in concept and content, with a total of 26 questions in 5 items, was applied to teachers from Chilean universities. Results: With a total of 21 participants, a 66.6% of them indicated that they use low- and high-fidelity CS. Among the trained skills, we found a 100% of attitudinal, 95.2% of procedural and 85.7% skills such as crisis management and patient safety. Regarding institutional limitations, an-85.7% of the participants reported that there are limitations for the implementation and/or insertion of the curriculum such as teaching training, managers who have knowledge of simulation, and economic reasons for implementation. Conclusion: There is an application of high and low fidelity in clinical simulation in various areas of kinesiology, with training of procedural, cognitive and attitudinal skills. However, there is a lack of homogeneity in the design, as there are also important institutional limitations for its implementation.
