ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to describe the main training tasks in the field of COVID-19 prevention coordinated by Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicine Institute. A descriptive qualitative methodological strategy was applied. A review was conducted of documents issued by the Ministry of Public Health leadership, as well as documents from the Teaching Department archive at the Institute, to provide a detailed description of the training tasks. Training had two specific goals for each stage: pre-epidemic and epidemic. A National Update Course was held in March with 160 participants who then provided phased training across the country. A group of professors participated in the training of the Henry Reeve Medical Brigades with a total 3 578 attendees. The training strategy applied illustrates the possibilities of the Cuban health system and its leading institutions in the field of academic instruction and adjusted response to an epidemic event such as COVID-19. Such training of the personnel from the health system and its sectors is essential to achieve the epidemic control and prevention results exhibited by Cuba, the experience acquired being handed over to the recovery stage. The training model used with the health personnel goes beyond the country's boundaries and validates a Cuban model based on technical knowledge and preparation of the personnel to comply with solidarity and internationalist principles in the fight against pandemics.
