ABSTRACT

The older adult population is the fastest growing segment of the world population, and with it the number of surgical interventions, both elective and emergency, increases every day. Older patients represent greater complexity, compared to younger patients, in terms of physiological, sociological, and psychological factors that challenge current models of care. The goal of performing surgery should be to offer the best possible quality of life, even though it represents a medical challenge due to associated comorbidity and decreased cardiopulmonary reserve.
