ABSTRACT
Introduction: Medicine advances day by day, which allows us to offer new solutions to the great diseases of humanity. A few decades ago people who suffered damage or injury to an organ, it was impossible to provide them with any kind of cure. Fortunately, organ transplantation revolutionized the way some diseases are treated. Studies relate positively or negatively the attitude of health personnel with the decision to donate, since they are the main ones in charge of publicizing these issues. The population expects to obtain information on organ donation from first-level physicians, so it is important that medical students graduate with an acceptable level of knowledge on the subject, in order to be able to provide guidance on myths, and misconceptions about organ and tissue donation for transplantation purposes. Objective: To determine the level of knowledge and attitude towards organ donation and transplantation in students of the Faculty of Medicine of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. Material and methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional, observational, qualitative, quantitative, Unicentric study through the survey of 31 items to medical students of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla who were enrolled in the August period-December 2020. For the results Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 Excel software was used in addition to IBM SPSS Statistics software. Results: We conducted 370 surveys of students from the Faculty of Medicine of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, to describe the level of knowledge and attitude towards organ donation and transplantation. Regarding the level of knowledge available to students of the Faculty of Medicine BUAP, we found that 95.9% of the respondents correctly responded to the definition of organ donation. It is known by 74.3% of respondents that mexican law prohibits the sale of organs under penalty of imprisonment, but only 41% of students know the title that protects and regulates the activities of donation of organs and tissues. We analyzed the cognitive dimension where it was found that 297 respondents agree that organ donation is necessary to save lives. Regarding the behavioral dimension, most of the respondents fully agree to sign a document that accredits him as an organ donor represented by 66.2% of the respondents. Conclusions: Most students have basic but not specific ideas about organ donation. There is a low level of knowledge about the laws and agencies governing organ donation programmes in the country. There is a positive attitude about donation in most students.REFERENCES
