ABSTRACT

Background: Purulent pericarditis is an infrequent disease whose most common cause is S. pneumoniae and S. aureus. Actinomyces odontolyticus is a rare pathogen in invasive infections.
Clinical case: A 92-year-old man who developed purulent pericarditis due to A. odontolyticus, which led to cardiac tamponade.
Conclusions: Our patient is the fourth reported case of pericardial A. odontolyticus, but the first one who is nonagenarian. Immunosuppression and dental focus are associated factors. Despite the high mortality rates associated with Actinomyces odontolyticus, this nonagenarian patient, the oldest in the literature, had a favorable evolution.
