ABSTRACT

Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is the most common non-scarring alopecia whose pathogenesis is related to genetics and androgens, however, other hormones have been involved in the hair follicle cycle, such as vitamin d.
Objective: It is to evaluate the serum levels of vitamin d in patients with aga and to observe if there is a relationship with the severity of the disease, in order to evaluate the role of this hormone in androgenic alopecia.
Methods: prospective, cross-sectional, and descriptive observational study. Thirty-two males clinically and trichoscopic diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia and 37 age-matched healthy controls were recruited, a blood sample was taken from each of both groups to detect the levels of total 25-hydroxyvitamin D.
Results: a greater vitamin D deficiency was found in the control group, when comparing the degree of severity of the disease and the levels of vitamin D, no statistically significant (p = 0.701) was found.
Conclusions: this study does not suggest an important role of the serum level of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of AGA, however it may be the beginning of other research studies including a larger number of patients.
