ABSTRACT

Background: hair-care has now become a frequent reason for consultation. Nowadays, there are innumerable cosmetic and dermatological products whose main goal is to maintain and promote scalp and hair care in order to obtain healthy, shiny and manageable hair. However, medical publications on these formulations are scarce due to the variability of their ingredients and unknown mechanisms of action. Trichology is a branch of dermatology which deals with the health, diseases and care of the hair and scalp. Thanks to the interest of the general population in hair care, trichologists and dermatologists have established in their daily practice the benefits associated with the use of these cosmetic products on the market.
Material and method: the scientific evidence published on hair care and cosmetics in the PubMed database and literary publications of trichological interest were analyzed. The main objective is to review the international publications on the use and benefits of currently available cosmetic products, in order to adequately instruct patients on the use, precautions and safety of current hair products.
Conclusion: knowing the structural anatomy of the hair fiber helps the dermatologist to understand the mechanism of action of the various cosmetic formulations with the aim of providing patients with healthy, shiny and strong hair.
