ABSTRACT

Background: Siamese twins, also known as conjoined twins, is a rare entity that occurs in one of 100,000 births. It is classified according to the binding site. We report a case of thoracoonphaloischiopagous conjoined twins with prenatal diagnosis (by ultrasound), at 13 weeks of gestation, with the presence of two heads, a united thorax with a single heart with atrioventricular concordance, sharing abdominal organs, genitalia and two lower extremities, the pregnancy was interrupted at 12.6 weeks of gestation by measuring cephalocaudal length. Early diagnosis is of great importance to offer better neonatal and maternal care. A review of the literature was carried out on aspects related to the etiopathogenesis and diagnosis of this malformation.
Clinical Case: A 34-year-old woman, with no significant pathological history for the current condition, who attended the gynecology and obstetrics service for a first-trimester control obstetric ultrasound where a twin pregnancy with thoracoonphaloischiopagous conjoined twins was detected with such an ultrasound diagnosis, it was decided to comment the case with the ethics committee to decide the pertinent follow-up.
Conclusion: Embryogenesis is based on fusion sites that must have occurred in late stages on day 13, due to the presence of a single heart, liver and stomach, which embryologically is located in the posterior region of the embryonic disc.
