Characterization of patients treated with RALCA external minifixer for unstable fractures of the distal end of the radius

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the fracture of the distal end of the radius is one of the most frequent injuries in orthopedic practice, the treatment of these injuries can be conservative or surgical, in relation to the latter, external fixation is one of the most used due to its advantages. Objective: to characterize patients treated with the RALCA external minifixer for unstable fractures of the distal end of the radius. Material and method: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study of a series of patients from the “Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima”, from the province of Cienfuegos from July 2017 to July 2019. The study universe consisted of 28 adult patients who underwent surgery for a fracture of the distal end of the radius by the ligamentotaxis technique. Descriptive statistics were applied. Results: males predominated (53.6%) and the age group from 26 to 36 years (28.6%). A greater number of patients were found in grade III (32.1%) according to the classification of fractures according to Frykman. Domestic accidents were the main cause of fracture (42.9%). It was observed that 82.1% of the patients evolved without complications. 60.7% of the patients obtained excellent results with the external fixation treatment. Conclusions: the use of the RALCA external minifixer is established as a technique of simple use and high effectiveness in the treatment of unstable fractures of the distal end of the radius.
