ABSTRACT

Introduction: The calculation of the dioptric power of the intraocular lens is the determining factor of the postoperative refractive condition in patients, and the selection of the appropriate formula is crucial.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of Holladay II formula in calculating the dioptric power of the intraocular lens.
Methods: A longitudinal comparative descriptive study was carried out, 40 eyes distributed in three groups according to the axial length were evaluated, which underwent the extraction of the lens and the implantation of the intraocular lens. These lenses were calculated with a formula chosen at random to determine the effectiveness. The residual spherical defect, the estimated spherical defect and the optimal spherical difference were evaluated three months after surgery.
Results: The Holladay II formula was effective in all axial lengths for the residual spherical defect, the Hoffer Q in the low and normal axial lengths, and the SRK-T was effective in the normal and high axial length. The Holladay II was effective at the low axial length for optimal spherical difference, less effective than the Hoffer Q at the normal axial length, and effective at the high axial length.
Conclusions: The Holladay II formula was effective in all axial lengths with a refractive defect considered Emmetropic.
