ABSTRACT

Introduction: Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis is an eosinophilic inflammatory lung disease, characterized by exaggerated immune responses or hypersensitivity to colonization of the airway by the fungal genus Aspergillus, predominantly in patients with bronchial asthma and cystic fibrosis.
Objective: To characterize allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, in order to share its peculiarities with the medical community.
Case presentation: Male dockworker who, after exposure to stored moldy wood, became sensitized with Aspergillus fumigatus and the diagnosis of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis was made several months later, among other causes, due to clinical, radiographic and laboratory overlap of other more common inflammatory lung diseases.
Conclusions: The Aspergillus genus is among those with the highest frequency of appearance in Cuba. However, there are very few reports of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and, therefore, it is little suspected and is confused with other chronic respiratory diseases.
