ABSTRACT

Introduction: Breastfeeding (BF) has physical and psychological benefits, for both the mother and newborn, a factor that favors weigth los that has been validated by some studies, however, others suggest a neutral or even negative influence in postpartum weigth loss. Objective: To determine the possible effect attributable to the practice of exclusive breastfeeding to favor the decrease of BMI in the mother in the first postpartum trimester. Materials and methods: A correlational observational, quantitative and longitudinal study, 68 women selected by intentional non-probabilistic sampling were followed for 3 months postpartum, it was assessed: pre-pregnancy BMI, weigth gain during pregnancy, exclusive breastfeeding, main causes of abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding, weigth at the end of pregnancy, BMI at one month, two and three months postpartum, recovery of prepregnancy BMI. Descriptive statistics and Spearman´s correlation were used. Results: 47% presented normal pre-pregnancy nutritional status according to BMI, 32.4% overweigth, 19.1% obesity grade 1 and 1.5% obesity grade 2. 67.6% obtained adequate weigth gain during pregancy, while 32.4% presented gain excess weigth. Breastfeeding prevalence was 70.5%; the main cause of abandonment was the perception of low milk production. By the third month postpartum, 63.2% of the women had regained their pre-pregnancy weight. Conclusions: The WHO recommendations on the practice of breastfeeding during the first 6 months of life are reinforced, considering this period a critical moment for changes in body composition and the risk of developing overweight and obesidy in future stages.
