ABSTRACT

Objetive: To evaluate whether the adolescent mother’s body perception is decisive for feeding the newborn with human milk during the first days of life. Methodology: This is an observational, crosssectional, comparative and prospective study. Only postpartum women hospitalized for birth care at the Hospital Universitario “Dr. José Eleuterio González”, in rooming-in, from January to October 2016 were included. The sample was divided into two groups: teenage mothers (19 years old or younger) and adult mothers (20 years old or older), all of them first-time mothers. A questionnaire was applied that examines body image during pregnancy, translated and validated. Breastfeeding was assessed at discharge. Results: 190 mothers participated, 95 were adolescents and 95 adults. The mean age of adolescents mothers 17.15 ± 1.31 years, and adult was 24.62 ± 4.62 years, (P=0.001). Most of the neonates were exclusively fed with human milk (84% adolescents and 87% adults). No association was found between body perception and human milk feeding in neonates of adolescent mothers (P=0.61). There was no evidence that the body perception of adolescent mothers is statistically significant with marital status, schooling and breastfeeding in the first days of life. Conclusions: There is no difference between the body perception of adolescent and adult women and no association was found with the feeding of the newborn with human milk exclusively at the time of hospital discharge.
