Herbalist medicine as cause of hepatotoxicity. Myths and realities

ABSTRACT

The herbalist products are frequently used for therapeutic purposes in our country. The analysis of several publications reveals the use of dozens of different herbs and herbal products purposes being associated to hepatic toxicity; however, many aspects limit the attribution of causation and the precise incidence. Traditional medicine in Mexico resumes some of the mechanisms and adverse effects of the main herbal plants commonly used. There are regulatory problems for their intake for therapeutic purposes.
