ABSTRACT
Introduction: a precarious nutritional status is a known risk factor for complications during the perioperative period, performing a simple screening that detects patients at risk makes intervention and adequate support possible.
Objective: to evaluate the usefulness of the NRS-2002 nutritional screening scale as a predictor of post-surgical complications.
Material and methods: observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study with a cohort of 80 patients older than 18 years hospitalized for surgical procedures. The NRS-2002 was applied to all of them to identify those at risk of malnutrition prior to the procedure. Complications were evaluated with the Clavien Dindo (CDC) classification and were correlated with the previous presence of malnutrition.
Results: the calculation of patients at risk of malnutrition with NRS 2002 was 12 (15%) patients, with a mean of 0.65. The sensitivity of the NRS 2002 to predict postoperative complications was 25% (95% CI 14.2-40.2%) with a specificity of 95% (95% CI 83.5-98.6%).
Conclusions: the NRS-2002 is a useful, simple and easy to apply tool to detect patients at risk of malnutrition who present post-surgical complications.
