ABSTRACT

The training of human resources for health is a topic of general interest, since the quality of the healthcare offered to the entire population depends on that. This is an essay on philosophy in medicine. Relevant texts and reports were reviewed in order to argue the points made in the text. Mexico is the 16th world economy, but it has one of the lowest rates of doctors in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (Mexico: 2.2 versus Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development average: 3.3 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants). This data contrasts with the opening of 45 new medical schools in the last 10 years: in Mexico, there are 158 medical schools from which around 18,000 doctors graduate a year, more than half of the new schools are not certified, which calls into question the quality of its graduates.
