ABSTRACT

Introduction: coronavirus disease 2019 is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2. It was discovered in China in December 2019. Organ donation and transplantation involves the use of immunosuppressants, many health professionals, and a possible transmission of the virus from donor to recipient, which means a higher risk of contracting the disease. Objective: to characterize organ donation and transplantation during COVID-19 pandemic. Method: articles from international transplantation journals and databases such as PubMed/MEDLINE and SciencieDirect were consulted using the terms "donation", "transplants", "organs" and "COVID-19"; in Spanish and English. The validity of the 22 articles was checked. Development: during COVID-19, organ donation and transplantation activity has been affected in the world. To date, few cases have been documented with regard to organ transplant recipients due to SARS-CoV-2, but some countries have adopted different guidelines according to the epidemiological and institutional risks as well as the risk of immunosuppression to achieve true protection for the donor and the transplant recipient. Conclusions: COVID-19 has seriously affected the process of organ donation and transplantation in some countries, which have taken measures in view of the great risk of infection for health professionals who are involved in this procedure and patients, due to the immunosuppressive treatment they receive and the possible transmission of the virus from donor to recipient.
