ABSTRACT

This report describes a simple technique for restoring acute dental caries in a field setting using a mixture of glass ionomer cements (GICs). A review of GIC chemistry and atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) technique, as well as 1-year findings are reported. A treatment team of dental students and a dentist placed 147 ART restorations using a mixture of equal parts Fuji IX and Fuji Plus. After one year, 39 restorations (average = 2.2 surfaces ) were examined at recall by the team dentist. Thirty-six were performing well. While some wear was evident on incisal edges, neither bulk fracture nor loss of restoration were observed in either anterior or posterior applications. Two of the three defective restorations were caries-free and present, despite adhesive failure. The three failed restoration was replaced because of a carious cavosurface margin defect. When conventional restorative measures are not available, the ART technique provides effective, accepted short-term restorations.
