ABSTRACT

The purpose of this survey was assess in a sample of 674 dentists in Mexico City their knowledge trough a questionnaire about the 1997 American Heart Association recommendation for antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent bacterial endocarditis. Results: Two hundred and eighty two dentists (41.8%) had seen patients with previous history of rheumatic fever. The first antibiotic option was penicillin G (43%) and amoxycillin (33.7%). In patients allergic to penicillin they choose erythromycin (85%), and clindamycin (11.7%). In respect to time the antibiotic was given 48 h in 46% of the respondents, 14.5% gave the antibiotic 1 hour before. Tooth extraction was the most recognized clinic procedure covered by antibiotic prophylaxis. Conclusions: Survey results suggests that in this dentists sample there are a lack of knowledge of 1997 AHA recommendation and the need for strategies for continuing dental education in order to prevent infective endocarditis on risk patients at the dental office.
