ABSTRACT

Introduction: kidney transplant patients are at high risk of COVID-19 infection. Due to this, transplants were reduced worldwide, with little experience in their development during the pandemic. Objectives: to report our experience in cadaveric donor kidney transplantation in three patients in Peru, two of whom developed SARS-CoV-2 infection after transplantation. Material and methods: case series of patients who received kidney transplantation at the Carlos Alberto Seguín Escobedo National Hospital in Arequipa, Peru, during December 2020. Results: three patients were evaluated, of which 66.7% were male, with a mean age of 43.6 ± 17.9 years and were transplanted with a negative molecular test (RT-PCR) result. Two of them had COVID infection during their hospitalization, but were asymptomatic and did not develop severe disease. One of the infected died with a functioning graft, due to upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Conclusions: despite the high risk of infection in patients who undergo kidney transplantation, this activity can be safe and successful cases have been reported.
