Electromiographic activity of the oris orbicularis muscle in patients with cleft lip. Pilot study

ABSTRACT

Introduction: electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction tests are the most useful electrodiagnostic methods in the study of quantitative oral physiology, assertiveness in diagnosis and prognostic factor, as well as guidance in the treatment and monitoring of limiting entities in craniofacial growth. Objective: this study is part of a line of research focused on knowing quantitative physiology at the craniofacial level and evaluating its clinical applicability. Therefore, the purpose of this pilot study is to evaluate the electromyographic activity of the oris orbicularis muscle during phonation, chewing and swallowing in young patients with a history of cleft lip. Material and methods: descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study with consecutive sampling technique, six young patients of both sexes between 12 and 16 years of age with a history of unilateral cleft lip who underwent surgery during their first year of life were included. Three recordings were made by means of surface electrodes in which the physiological adaptation capacity of the oris orbicularis muscle was evaluated, as well as the increase or decrease in elasticity and lip flexibility during rest, swallowing, chewing and phonation, and thus evaluate its clinical applicability. Results: the electromyographic activity of the oris orbicularis muscle in patients with cleft lip showed an increase in action potentials and therefore a higher energy consumption that can condition muscle hypertrophy, limitation in lip elasticity and flexibility. Conclusions: given that there is a statistically significant difference in the electromyography activity of the orbicularis oris muscle during swallowing, chewing and phonation in the six patients evaluated, we can conclude that the study of neuromuscular activity by means of electromyography in the oris orbicularis muscle is a useful and applicable routine method in the daily practice of patients with cleft lip.
