ABSTRACT
Introduction: infection is defined as the invasion and multiplication of microorganisms in the tissues of a host, in an environment that favors it. The disease appears when the balance is broken, altering the defensive mechanisms of the host. The infection may be confined to the oral cavity or affect different fascial spaces. Objective: in the present study, it was intended to know the incidence and frequency of cervicofacial abscesses received in the Maxillofacial Surgery Service at the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara "Dr. Juan I. Menchaca", during the period of 2005-2008, as well as its origin, age, sex, most affected side and facial spaces involved. Study design: data were collected from the outpatient lists of the Maxillofacial Surgery Service granted from Monday to Friday in the morning and evening shifts; the cases were reviewed to establish those that would be included in the study. There were a total of 124 patients. Results: of the 124 patients, 62 were male and 62 female; regarding the origin, 91.1% were odontogenic and 8.9% non-odontogenic, with the left side being more affected in 48.4%. 75% of the patients presented affection of a single facial space, being the submandibular the most involved, 65.3%. A total of 1,795 admissions were obtained, with an annual average of 449 admissions. Conclusion: for the maxillofacial surgeon, cervicofacial infections are one of the pathological entities that are most likely to present in the Emergency Department, as well as in outpatient consultation, so knowledge of the etiopathogenesis, anatomy and treatment is essential to avoid complications during it.REFERENCES
