Ethical aspects in the management of prostate cancer patients

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Prostate cancer is one of the most common reasons why male patients aged over 60 years attend the urologic oncology service. Its treatment causes disagreeable adverse events with an impact on quality of life.
Objectives: Describe the ethical aspects related to the symptoms, treatment and complications of prostate cancer patients and carry out a topic review useful to the multidisciplinary team.
Methods: A search was conducted in the databases PubMed and SciELO for publications about cancer bioethical descriptors and prostate cancer treatment.
Results: The interview identifies the patients' conflict between wellbeing and control of their disease, autonomy and knowledge about the condition affecting them, and the complicity of doctors and relatives in concealing the truth from them. New scientific paradigms should be developed within the contents of the training program for new urologic oncologists, with appropriate knowledge about bioethics and the humanities to face the new dilemmas emerging in the process of information to patients and their relatives.
Conclusions: Respect for patients' autonomy, non-maleficence and justice when selecting the appropriate treatment to control the disease, are ethical aspects related to the management of symptoms, treatment and complications to be dealt with during the interview with prostate cancer patients.
