ABSTRACT

In humans, infection by algae of the genus Prototheca is known as protothecosis. Clinically there are three presentations: cutaneous, olecranon bursitis and disseminated. The most frequent species is P. wickerhamii, followed by P. zopfii. Cutaneous infection is uncommon, usually occurs due to some local injury. Protothecosis mainly affects immunosuppressed individuals; It can occur at any age, although it is more common in the elderly. The cutaneous form is clinically and histologically similar to deep mycoses. Diagnosis depends on accurate morphologic identification of the etiologic agent through biopsy, culture, biochemical testing, and/or molecular biology.
