ABSTRACT
Introduction: temporal bone dissection is a complex surgery. Simulation is a learning strategy for the development of these surgical skills in a safe environment.
Objectives: to design, implement and evaluate an otologic surgical skills learning course for residents.
Material and methods: the otologic surgical records of residents who graduated from our center between 2019 and 2022 were obtained. The course was designed using Kern's 6-step model. It was evaluated by measuring Kirkpatrick levels 1 and 2 using satisfaction and self-perception surveys of surgical skills learning before and after.
Results: a considerable dispersion of otologic surgical exposure was found within residents. Four learning objectives were defined for the course, and CanMEDS competencies of the Expert Role in Otolaryngology were established. The selected methodology was simulation in cadaveric models. Participants included 16 residents, reporting a high degree of satisfaction and a significant increase in the perception of post-course learning achievement in all the evaluated surgical competencies (p < 0.001).
Conclusions: the designed and implemented course is a notable contribution to the acquisition and promotion of surgical skills of residents. It proved to be a highly satisfactory experience, positively valued by residents, achieving improvement in the self-reported surgical skills.
