ABSTRACT
Introduction: early-onset scoliosis is a disease that should be treated differently from adolescent scoliosis, since its characteristics give it a different evolution and a different possibility of treatment, the understanding of these treatments by the orthopedist It must be a priority, this opens the world to broader prognosis possibilities for some cases; one of the best treatment systems today is the VEPTR system, which is also called the expandable staple system, which has been shown to decrease the risk of the deadliest complication of this disease, which is chest compression syndrome, and helping to decrease the range of the curve, facilitating treatment as it grows. Objective: this system must be evaluated in our population to have a real evaluation of our patients. Material and methods: 17 patients with a diagnosis of early-onset scoliosis who meet the inclusion criteria were evaluated, being evaluated in terms of age, sex, comorbidities, classification according to the C-EOS, complications, number of surgeries performed, cob index. according to evolution with treatment, complications and clinical improvement according to FEV1/FVC and respiratory patterns. Results: the ages of the patients vary between three to thirteen years, twelve patients are between 3 to 7.4 years, three patients are from 7.5 to 11.4 years and two patients are older than 11.5 years. The main etiology is neuromuscular scoliosis and the main pathology was neurofibrosis. The average curve decrease was 21o degrees after the five expansion surgeries. Conclusion: the VEPTR system seems to be a good treatment to reduce the risk of chest compression syndrome.REFERENCES
