ABSTRACT

Introduction: waist and neck circumference, body mass indexes, waist-height and neck-height indices of a group of patients treated at the Obesity Clinic of the National Institute of Pediatrics (INP) in Mexico were analyzed in order to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on eating habits, sleep, screen time, physical activity and weight. Material and methods: a longitudinal and retro-prospective study was carried out from January 01 to September 30, 2020. Two evaluations were carried out: a baseline with data obtained from the clinical record of each subject before the pandemic and a subsequent face-to-face study. Eating habits, screen exposure time, physical activity and anthropometric markers of adiposity were recorded in each of them. Results: 68 individuals were studied. In 57 of them an increase in the consumption of hypercaloric foods and the time of exposure to screens was observed; a decrease in the time of physical activity and imbalances of the recommended sleep schedule. All showed an increase in the indicators and indices of body adiposity. The remaining 11 individuals were preserved or improved in the parameters evaluated. Conclusions: the recommended home confinement during COVID-19 caused in most of the studied population a greater consumption of calories and time spent on screens, reduced the time of physical activity, misadjusted the recommended sleep schedule and increased its indicators and body fat indexes, which represents a risk to their health.
