ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the epidemiological profile of surviving families from cervical cancer. Methods: Families of patients with positive diagnose for cervical cancer from 2018 to 2021 were located. Families in which at least one of their members had a diagnosis of cervical cancer in a remission stage reported by histopathology were included in the study. Information about their socioeconomic level, their use of health services profile, the typology and family functionality, along with the stage of the family life cycle. Results: 80% (95% CI; 62.46 - 97.53) of the families were functional and 20% (95% CI; 2.46 - 37.53) moderately functional. The most frequent types of family were: nuclear and single parent, both represented 30% (95% CI; 9.91 - 50.08). Retirement and death 50% (95% CI; 28.08 - 71.91) was the predominant phase of the family life cycle, followed by the expansion phase which represented 30% (95% CI; 9.91 - 50.08). Conclusions: The results of this study reaffirm the importance of the family in coping with diseases that impact its members. “Family plasticity” was evidenced, which allows the family to continue being a functional unit even after facing a catastrophic disease such as cervical cancer.
