ABSTRACT

When talking about Franco Basaglia, it is easy to confuse the antipsychiatric postulations of the English or North American school, with the implementation of a democratic and emancipatory exercise that implies. Not only a questioning of psychiatric practice but also of what we call mental health in general, running the risk of slipping it to the point that is referred to as an "Italian antipsychiatry." It is therefore necessary to subvert Basaglia's discourse from the tendency to group him to glimpse his traces or the misrepresentation of them in his relationship with the formation of mental health specialists in Mexico and the interrelation with policies in the same field. In the same way, recognizing his position makes it easier to locate the great significance of his thinking in the policies and practices favored by international health organizations.
