Acute appendicitis in pregnancy: surgery challenge

ABSTRACT

Acute appendicitis is the most common cause of acute surgical abdomen during pregnancy. Its diagnosis becomes complicated, due to the anatomical and physiological changes that occur during this period, so its clinical presentation will not always be as clear as in the non-obstetric population. A timely diagnosis in which, in addition to the clinic and laboratory values, imaging studies are included is of importance when there is diagnostic doubt. The definitive management of acute appendicitis is by means of an appendectomy, either by laparoscopic or open technique. A timely approach to this pathology would reduce maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality.
