ABSTRACT
Introduction: vertebral fracture is defined as an injury that compromises from a vertebral body to the functional vertebral unit. The surgical pathology of the spine is equivalent to a fifth of the surgical procedures of the spine, where the lumbosacral region is the main segment affected by traumatic injury.
Objective: to determine the characteristics of the fractures, clinical and demographic aspects of the patient and management of patients diagnosed with traumatic fracture of the lumbar spine at the General Hospital 450 in Durango during the period from January 2017 to December 2021.
Material and methods: descriptive and retrospective study of patients hospitalized in 5 years in the Neurosurgery service of the General Hospital 450 of Durango with a diagnosis of traumatic fracture of the spine in the lumbar region, the information was collected from the clinical files.
Results: 51 cases were included, 60.8% men and 39.2% women with a median age of 39 years. The prevalence found was 0.17%, a median hospital stay of 10 days, the most frequently injured vertebra was L
1 with 39.2%, 29.4% presented type A4 fracture. of the AO Spine, 39.2% had a low-energy fall as the mechanism of injury, the most frequent neurological deficit at hospital admission was ASIA E 68.8%, 78.4% of the cases did not have any other type of injury, 17.6% suffered managed conservatively and 82.4% underwent surgical management, 15.7% had some complication.
Conclusions: our results concours for the most part with those found in the world literature, however we found a higher frequency of low-energy falls as a mechanism of injury, 20% of the patients we managed had an associated injury in another organ or system, our complication rate was 15%.
