ABSTRACT

Introduction: hemangiomas were originally described by Virchow in 1867. Although they are considered benign tumors of vascular origin, they sometimes tend to have an aggressive behavior. Material and methods: a search was carried out in six different databases with the keywords, articles related to the aggressive behavior of a vertebral hemangioma between 1999 and 2022 were searched, 14 articles were included. Conclusions: historically, vertebral hemangioma has been considered a benign pathology. The literature has recently shown that vertebral hemangiomas can, however, have a regional behavior considered as "aggressive". Both the stability of the spine and the degree of neurological deficit that the patient presents should be evaluated, and treatment should be guided based on these parameters. Despite being a pathology considered as benign, it has been shown that vertebral hemangiomas can present in a locally aggressive manner, which is why they require regular radiological and clinical surveillance.
