ABSTRACT

Introduction: fractures at the spine level represent a high association with levels of residual disability, prolonged hospitalizations, and the need for subsequent follow-up occurring mostly in an economically active population, generating large costs for health and social security systems. Classification: after an adequate clinical and radiographic evaluation, the patient should be categorized in some of the existing classifications designed as a system to facilitate communication between researchers and physicians and to optimize patient care. Treatment: according to the different methods of classification, an adequate treatment aimed at early intervention should be carried out using the various options currently available aimed at conservative or surgical treatment as appropriate. Conclusion: after an adequate clinical and radiological assessment, as well as a correct staging of the type of fracture, making use of the different management algorithms orienting towards surgical or conservative treatment, thus reducing the appearance of possible complications and residual neurological deficits with the consequent lower impact on the patient's quality of life.
