ABSTRACT

The heart failure is a complex síndrome caused by structural alterations and/or heart function that leads to symptomatic manifestations like dyspnea and fatigue; affects approximately 26 million of persons above the world. The iron is an essential mineral for the right function of the muscles that get energy through processes like oxidative phosphorylation and Krebs cycle which takes place in the mitochondria. The myocardium has a large number of this organelles, for this reason, alterations in the balance of this mineral can generate systematic failures that leads to muscle dysfunction. Approximately half of the patients with heart failure develops iron deficiency, a comorbidity that may appear with or without anemia and that by itself aggravate the signs and symptoms of the disease. For the diagnosis is taken into account serum levels of ferritin and transferrin saturation. The last guides of management indicate that the treatment must be intravenous iron since it’s been proved that has big benefits in the reversibility of the cardiac remodelation, in the functional clasification and the perception of quality of life of the patients. This review was made in order of gather the information available in literatura and determine which alternatives of treatment derive in a better quality of life.
