ABSTRACT

Introduction: penetrating keratoplasty in the pediatric population represents a great surgical. In Mexico the main indication is keratoconus and herpetic keratitis. Objective: to determine the one-year survival of penetrating keratoplasty in the pediatric population. Material and methods: records of patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty were reviewed, from July 2012 to July 2021. Type of study: observational, retrospective, cross-sectional and descriptive. It was carried out in the statistical program SPSS 20, using the statistical method of Kaplan and Meier. Results: total of 93 patients. Twenty-five patients were excluded to incomplete records. A total of 68 patients: 25 (37%) female and 43 (63%) male. Age group 53 (78%) in adolescents, more frequent; 11 (16%) schoolchildren; 2 (3%) minor infants; 1 (1.5%) older infant and 1 (1.5%) preschooler. Average age of 13.5 years. The main indication was keratoconus in 31 (45.59%), followed by leukoma in 19 (27.94%). Patients with ophthalmological comorbidity 32 (47%) patients. Patients with systemic comorbidities in 16 (24%) patients. In 42 (62%) patients had an improvement in visual acuity. Corneal graft survival at one year was 76% in 52 patients. Conclusions: in recent years, new care procedures have been designed and perfected, which have allowed increasing the survival of transplants in pediatric patients.
