ABSTRACT
Introduction: pain and limitation of shoulder mobility are frequent clinical complications in post-mastectomy patients for breast cancer (CaMa). Its approach is multidisciplinary and physiotherapy contributes to its recovery. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of rehabilitation on mobility and shoulder pain on post mastectomized patients for breast cancer.
Material and methods: a prospective, longitudinal, pre- and post-intervention study was realized. 29 mastectomy breast cancer women treated at IMSS-Yucatán, >38 years old, were included. Pain was evaluated with a visual analog pain scale, shoulder mobility with conventional goniometry, and scar characteristics before and after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using parametric and non-parametric tests as appropriate.
Results: there is statistically significant improvement in shoulder pain scores after the implementation of the physiotherapeutic program (pre-3.07 ± 2.43 vs post- 1.7 ± 1.62 pts), flexion ranges of motion (146.34° ± 26.36° vs 164.55° ± 18.03°) and abduction (140.93°± 33.28° vs 160.28° ± 29.88°). As well as an improvement without statistical significance in the characteristics of the scar with a persistence of Tinel's sign and adherence in 3.4% and 31.0% respectively.
Conclusions: rehabilitation positively influences the reduction of pain and shoulder mobility in patients with painful shoulder post mastectomy for breast cancer.
