ABSTRACT

Introduction: the optimal management of intravenous intraoperative fluids is critical since insufficient and excessive resuscitation is associated with damage. Due to this, lung ultrasound monitoring is positioned as an essential method to guide fluid resuscitation. Objective: to understand the relationship between total fluid balance (TFB) and the appearance of lines A and B during the perioperative period in patients undergoing surgery under general anesthesia. Material and methods: a prospective, longitudinal, and observational study was carried out. TFB was quantified throughout the surgery, and the amount of fluid was assessed by pulmonary ultrasound, identifying the appearance of lines A and B. Results: the sample was made up of 50 patients. A statistically significant relationship was observed between the appearance of A-lines and TFB (p = 0.009), a situation that did not occur between TFB, and the appearance of B lines (p = 0.503). An association was found between BMI and the appearance of B lines (p = 0.001). Conclusions: the evidence suggests that the appearance of B lines can help determine if overhydration has been entered in obese patients.
