ABSTRACT

Introduction: triage protocols help to address emergency situations and facilitate decision-making by professionals. In Mexico, the Bioethics Guide for the allocation of limited critical care resources in emergency situations was published in 2020, which is based on criteria of social justice and recognizes that all lives have the same value. Objectives: the study aimed to explore the experience of Critical Care Medicine specialists in the application of triage criteria during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, and to identify the bioethics principles they recognized during this process. Material and Methods: a descriptive observational study was conducted with a single measurement. A 41-question instrument was applied to explore the application of triage to 18 members (M = 48.3 years; 50% men; 89% doctors) of the Mexican College of Critical care medicine. A frequency analysis of the results obtained was performed. Results: it was found that most participants are familiar with the processes and have applied them during the COVID-19 health emergency. It was concluded that the application of triage criteria is more efficient when healthcare professionals recognize the principles of bioethics in their application. Conclusions: the results suggest that its application is a complex task that requires careful ethical consideration and constant updating by healthcare professionals.
