ABSTRACT

Objective: To identify the emerging emotions that doctors presented during professional care in the period of confinement derived from the COVID-19 Pandemic. It was a qualitative exploratory study. Thirty-seven Mexican doctors from different specialties participated voluntarily and anonymously. The information was obtained through a form that was sent electronically using Google Forms and/or by direct delivery to the doctors at their workplace. It was found that the most frequent emotions were: Worry (26), Anxiety (23), Fear (22), Anguish (20), Depression (19) and Sadness (17). The emotions that oscillated between 12 and 10 responses were the following: Disappointment (12), Despair (11), Hope (11) and Fear (10). The least frequent emotions were: Isolation (9), Disbelief (8), Longing (8), Hopelessness (7) and Happiness (2). There were other emotions that they added and others mentioned various emotions as a set to express their feelings. Conclusions: Faced with the COVID-19 Pandemic, health personnel have been exposed to different emotions during the care of patients infected with the new coronavirus. Medical care was maintained despite the exhausting work days, the scarcity of material and human resources, as well as an infrastructure that could not support the demand for care in health institutions. The Mexican doctors in this study showed that among the psychological consequences will be in their experience having experienced emotions of sadness, impotence, pain and emotional suffering due to the loss of family members, colleagues, friends, acquaintances, and patients. Finally, it must be recognized that there is human fragility in the face of disease, that life is finite and that it will be necessary to continue exploring with the medical sector about the post-pandemic emotional consequences.
