Knowledge about prevention of oral cancer and risk factors present in the elderly adult

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Oral cancer is a malignant neoplasia that affects the human beings and it is a critical health problem worldwide.
Objective: To identify the level of knowledge about prevention of oral cancer and risk factors present in the elderly adult.
Methods: An observational descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out, the universe was formed by 134 patients older than 60 years old, from the Doctor´s office # 10, corresponding to the north area, in Sancti Spíritus municipality, who went to the dental clinic for dental assistance. The variables were: age, sex, knowledge and risk factors related to oral cancer. They were collected by a knowledge survey and from the part of the patients ‘charts related to the risk factors.
Results: Patients of 60 to 69 years old, for a 47 % and the female sex, with a 58.2 % prevailed. The 62.6 % of the adults, had insufficient knowledge. Not well adjusted dental prostheses, 38.1 %, smoking habit, 32 % and alcohol consumption, 18 % were the most representative risk factors.
Conclusions: The most representative age group was from 60 to 69 years old and the female sex, there is insufficient knowledge about prevention of oral cancer, in all age groups. Not well adjusted dental prostheses, smoking habit and alcoholism are the most frequent risk factors, in the elderly population.
