ABSTRACT
This study addresses the topic of vascularized composite allotransplantation - facial transplantation from a bioethical perspective, with the aim of analyzing the ethical aspects that must be considered in this surgical technique. The methodology used consisted of a systematic review of scientific literature published in the last five years in different databases. A total of 21 articles were analyzed, which approached the topic from a bioethical perspective. The keywords used were facial transplantation, vascularized composite allotransplantation, bioethics, medical ethics, informed consent, and identity. The results obtained indicate that facial transplantation raises various ethical dilemmas, including informed consent, patient's identity and autonomy, distributive justice, and the relationship between the donor and the recipient. It was also found that social opinion and the opinions of healthcare experts on facial transplantation also influence its acceptance and application. The most relevant conclusions of the study point out that facial transplantation is a complex surgical technique that requires a thorough evaluation of the ethical aspects that must be considered. The implementation of protocols and ethical guidelines is recommended to guide decisions regarding patient selection and informed consent in an assertive manner. Furthermore, the importance of promoting ethical discussion and reflection on facial transplantation to improve its acceptance and application in society is highlighted. In summary, this study provides a critical and reflective perspective on facial transplantation in Mexico from a bioethical standpoint and suggests the need to further delve into this area to enhance its clinical and social practice.
