ABSTRACT

Introduction: constipation is a common symptom in pediatric consultations, with an estimated prevalence of 0.9 to 30%. Objective: to show the usefulness of a radiopaque marker technique for the diagnosis of functional constipation. Material and methods: observational study, in 100 patients with functional constipation according to the Rome IV criteria. The technique consists of preparing a gelatin capsule with 10 radiopaque rounds, obtained from a feeding tube. After ingestion, a simple abdominal X-Ray is performed 48 hours later. The results are classified according to the abdominal area where the markers are located. Results: 64 women and 36 men were studied. Seventeen had markers in the colon, 40 in the sigmoid, six patients were found in both the colon and the sigmoid, and in 37 no markers were detected. Conclusions: the use of this test allows, in a simple, economical way and with minimal radiation, to classify the subtype of functional constipation, whether due to slow colonic transit, obstruction or normal colonic transit.
