The founding process of the Academia Mexicana de Pediatría

ABSTRACT

The founding process of the Academia Mexicana de Pediatría is presented as a result of the development that national pediatrics achieved in the mid-20th century. The first part of the article shows the birth of Mexican pediatrics during the second half of the 19th century. At that time, men and institutions emerged that laid the foundations for the fabulous work that we have today, beginning with the decrees of President Juárez and continuing. with the work of doctors Eduardo Liceaga, Samuel Morales, Miguel Otero, Carlos Tejeda, and Manuel Domínguez. In the second part, the emergence of the university chair of the specialty is presented, the first hospitals of the 20th century, such as the Hospital Infantil de México founded by Dr. Federico Gómez and the appearance of the first pediatric groups, such as the Sociedad Mexicana de Pediatría and the Asociación Nacional de Pediatría de México, which culminated in the creation of the Academia Mexicana de Pediatría on June 06, 1951, with Dr. Mario A. Torroella being its first president.
