ABSTRACT

Introduction: mechanical power has been used as a predictor of outcomes in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation, however, inconsistencies exist in the literature. Objective: to evaluate the association of mechanical power with survival in patients with mechanical ventilation. Design: systematic review and meta-analysis. Sources: databases: Medline, Scopus, Clinical Trials, KoreaMed, Web of Science. Study selection: studies that included adults on mechanical ventilation and that reported mechanical power and mortality. Data extraction: of 128 studies found, six cohort studies were selected, and a secondary analysis of randomized controlled trials (n = 3,775) were selected. Low risk of bias was found in all studies. The median mechanical power cut-off value was 17 J/min. Data synthesis: it was found that low mechanical power is associated with greater survival in patients with mechanical ventilation (OR 0.45, 95% CI [0.34-0.59]; I2 56%). Conclusions: in adult patients on mechanical ventilation, low mechanical power was associated with greater survival.
