ABSTRACT

Introduction: postoperative cognitive impairment is a complication that increases hospital stay, morbidity, and mortality and has long-term consequences in a patient's daily life. Perioperative screening (Mini-Cog) helps detect risk factors and predict complications, especially in adults over 65, allowing them to prevent, diagnose, and give opportune treatment. Objective: to identify the population at risk of cognitive impairment with the application of Mini-Cog in the preoperative period and to detect the risk factors associated with its postoperative presentation. Material and methods: the Mini-Cog scale was applied to patients scheduled for surgery in the preoperative period from January 2022 to March 2022. A descriptive analysis was performed, and the association between nominal and quantitative variables was evaluated. Results: an association was found between the presence of impairment with a low METS score, ASA score 2 and 3, alcoholism, and weight loss, as well as a higher score on the Katz and Caprini scale. Conclusion: through the application of perioperative Mini-Cog, it is possible to detect patients with risk factors for postoperative cognitive impairment and provide timely treatment, prevention, and diagnosis.
